Frequently Asked Questions
- What is NPS?
- The National Pension System (NPS) is a government-backed, voluntary retirement scheme regulated by PFRDA. Contributions are invested in equity, corporate bonds and government securities. At retirement (age 60), you can withdraw up to 60% tax-free and use the rest to buy a monthly pension (annuity).
- How much can I withdraw as lump sum?
- At retirement you can withdraw up to 60% of the NPS corpus as a tax-free lump sum. A minimum of 40% must be used to purchase an annuity for monthly pension. You can choose to invest more in annuity for higher monthly income.
- What returns does NPS generate?
- NPS equity funds have historically returned 10–14% p.a. A balanced Tier I allocation typically yields 9–11% p.a. This calculator uses 10% p.a. as default — adjust based on your actual fund selection.
- What are the tax benefits of NPS?
- NPS offers deductions under Section 80CCD(1) up to ₹1.5L, an additional ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B), and employer contributions under 80CCD(2). The 60% lump sum at maturity is entirely tax-free, making NPS one of the most tax-efficient retirement tools in India.
